Dr. Michael Bennett is in the business of saving eyesight. As president of the Retina Institute of Hawaii (RIH), his desire to heal sometimes trumps his belief in the bottom line.

RIH treats every patient who walks through the door, regardless of insurance or ability to pay. “We probably write off tens of thousands of dollars in free care each month,” Bennett estimates. “They can’t afford it.”

Thanks to six years of growth, the institute can afford to help. Since opening in 2001, Bennett’s practice has grown from two to nearly 30 employees, including four doctors. Last year, RIH opened offices on Maui and the Big Island and expanded to three on Oahu. Its reputation brings patients from the Mainland, Asia and the Pacific for high-tech surgery. RIH physicians also conduct clinical research and educate other doctors in diagnosis and treatment.

Now RIH is even going out looking for patients who don’t visit the eye doctor. Its new nonprofit – Project Vision – recently debuted a state-of-the-art mobile screening clinic that travels to rural areas and community events, in hopes of detecting eye disease before it’s too late.

Bennett credits a top-notch staff for RIH’s success: “If you’re honest, work hard, surround yourself with kind and generous and like-minded people, great things will happen.”

Retirement is one thing that has not been easy for Ron Martin. His lasted about 90 days. After a successful Mainland career in the home-party jewelry business, he retired to Waikiki to learn how to surf. Instead, he discovered retail selling.

This led to another business. Martin founded Success Dynamics Inc. in 1991 to provide clients with motivational tools and coaching to achieve sales success. He started with one Waikiki client and now his company serves more than 100 clients monthly in more than 500 worldwide locations, including 28 clients in Hawaii and North America. His company’s mission statements are: “We Make Success Easy” and “Your Success Is Our Business.”

“We focus on helping other companies be successful, and that results in our own success,” says Martin, a sought-after speaker and author of five books, all of which have the word “easy” in their titles.

The key to Success Dynamics’ success is the customization of Martin’s unique tools. They include: audio and video tapes, regular “Success Rallies” to meet with and motivate clients’ employees and The Daily Morning Report, which tracks and quantifies client progress against company goals.

Martin, who has expanded operations to South America, hopes to build an industry-specific national sales team to reach more niche-market small-business clients.

Martin even has a T-shirt and vanity license plate with the word “Easy” as a reminder. As if he needs one.
