Good Neighbors: David McKale

David McKale, the 53-year-old director of risk services at Hawaii Human Resources, has been volunteering “pretty much all my life.”

So when Melissa Pavlicek, the executive director of the Society for Human Resource Management Hawaii, approached McKale in 2013 about volunteering to serve on SHRM Hawaii’s board and to speak at events, he quickly agreed.

“David has consistently volunteered at job fairs and career expos, giving job seekers resume advice, interview tips and conducting mock interviews,” Pavlicek says.

“The reason I am so enthusiastic about his efforts is because he is a passionate HR professional who truly helps connect people with jobs that fit them – not just any job or the best job – but that job that is best for them, because, ultimately, that’s what makes a person successful.”

McKale, a Kailua resident originally from Canada, says he volunteers not only to give back to the community, but because he gets a lot out of it. “Whether it’s interviewing wounded warriors, students fresh out of college or military people transitioning back into civilian life, you get a really great perspective of other people’s knowledge and skills and also some of the pitfalls they’re going through.”
