Holy Nativity School

October, 2014

14-Nov-HB-Holy-Nativity-01This year, Holy Nativity School is celebrating 65 years of providing an incredible foundation of character, heart and excellence for generations of Hawai`i’s keiki. The school’s rich history of creating a quality learning environment in a small intimate setting for children from age three through sixth grade, make it a gem in East Oahu.  With a new student-designed, eco-friendly playground built by the school and local community, the annual Great Pumpkin Festival in October, and this year’s “65 Strong!” anniversary, the HNS community has much to celebrate.

Leadership opportunities abound at HNS. All students develop their confidence, independence, sense of service and their ability to bring value to the communities in which they live, work and play! Another signature program at HNS is global education.  Through global education, HNS students learn to appreciate the world and local culture, better preparing them for the 21st century. The school’s integrated, project based curriculum is delivered by talented and committed teachers who provide individualized attention to encourage students’ outstanding academic achievements and help them to hone their leadership skills.

“In the Episcopal tradition we are called to create an inclusive and respectful learning community for all,” says Tim Spurrier, head of school at HNS. “The growth and development of each child involves many dimensions: heart, mind, body, and soul. When you visit our campus you will see our motto, ‘Character, Heart, and Excellence,’ in action.” As the first elementary school in Hawaii to be accredited by WASC, HNS continues to be the state’s only Episcopal school that focuses exclusively on the preschool and elementary grade years.

Today, HNS is celebrating initiatives including foreign language instruction and the integration of Orton-Gillingham along with Reading and Writing Workshop. To educate the whole child, five specialist teachers in music/Hawaiian studies, art, physical education, religion and computer technology work collaboratively with classroom teachers to enrich the instructional day. In addition, HNS offers service learning projects and class trips to the Big Island, Maui and Arizona, which create unique opportunities for experiential learning.

Technologically advanced, HNS features a wireless campus, interactive Promethean Boards in classrooms, ipads and laptops. This one-class-per-grade level school includes facilities more often seen at larger schools- three playfields, a full-size gymnasium, art room, music room and computer lab-all situated on a beautiful and open, safe and quiet two-acre campus.
HNS creates a big school experience in a small school setting, valuing high expectations balanced with great heart.  Each year, HNS graduates successfully transition to Hawai`i’s finest secondary schools. Prospective families are encouraged to schedule a personalized campus tour to experience the school in action.
