Managing Director, Hawaii Operations AT&T, Tandem Bicyclist
Jackie Ingamells and her husband, Lee, often have some of their best conversations late on a Sunday afternoon. They’ll catch up on happenings throughout the week, talk about their neighbors’ yards or maybe some challenges at work. The fact that Lee has his back to her the entire time makes little difference. Jackie is fulfilling her dream of riding a bicycle, and she’s having a ball.
Jackie, managing director of Hawaii operations for AT&T, was born and raised in densely populated and decidedly bicycle unfriendly Hong Kong. When she relocated to the Islands to attend the University of Hawaii, there never seemed to be any time to bike around.
“It’s something that I’ve always wanted to do. I even helped teach my son how to ride, and I was a little sad when I became the only person in the family who couldn’t do it,” says Jackie. “My family always knew about my desire, so, last Mother’s Day, my husband bought a tandem bike. It was the best present I’ve ever gotten. I took a picture of it and showed it to everyone.”
Every Sunday at 5 p.m. Jackie and Lee take a 30-minute ride around their Mililani neighborhood. Sometimes they’ll run an errand, but most often they’ll just wander. Their son, Jonathan, often rides along on his electric scooter.
“I love spending time with my family, rediscovering my neighborhood and feeling the trade winds against my face,” says Jackie. “My New Year’s resolution is to ride on my own next year. Then I’m going to do a triathlon.”
