Our Hawaii: Damien Memorial School
Our Hawaii: Native Content
In 1962 the Irish Christian Brothers founded the all-boys Damien Memorial School in Honolulu, a Catholic private school honoring the life and service of Saint Damien of Moloka`i. Teaching under the school motto, “Viriliter Age,” the school grew to provide quality education to students from all walks of life. Three years ago they expanded their mission by opening enrollment to girls, a change that has doubled enrollment to over 680 students. Admissions Director Brent Limos believes the change to co-ed enrollment has benefited the school, “It’s been a positive change to add girls to our campus, they’ve helped raise the bar even higher both in terms of academics as well as athletics.”
Damien Memorial is a fully accredited, college preparatory middle and high school serving grades 6-12, with an impressive 98% college-placement rate for graduates. The school has always maintained a strong academic program— most of the scholarship awards (last year, $2.5M from 60 colleges across 24 different states) to graduating seniors are due to academic performance—but in the past year has also found success in athletics—the girls’ varsity basketball and volleyball teams, as well as the boy’s football team recently qualified for the state championship tournament.
With the help of TC Ching Foundation, which provided the school with a donation matching incentive, Damien Memorial is building several new facilities designed to better the educational experience of their students and expand the performing arts and technology programs. A new athletic facility is being built, with plans for a new music building, library, and student services center. Next year, traditional textbooks will be replaced with a 1:1 MacBook Pro program and online curriculum, allowing students greater accessibility to the latest course materials.
Despite the renovations and new technology, the school is dedicated to keeping tuition affordable and to accepting students from a variety of socio-economic backgrounds. Furthermore, Damien Memorial School remains a safe haven for all students, with a focus on developing responsible, respectful, and community-minded citizens, all characteristics based on practices taught in the Essential Elements of an Edmund Rice Christian Brother Education.
