Honolulu ground crews refuel Island Air planes after every arrival. Jet fuel is piped from Sand Island to “fuel pits” on the tarmac. From there, hydrant carts — essentially big pumps on wheels — pump the fuel to the planes. Here, Lambert Castillo is about to connect a cart’s supply line to a pipe hidden in the fuel pit. It takes about 10 minutes to fill the fuel tanks of an ATR 72 turboprop.
