Marielle Nakai, all of 3, is becoming an avid reader of Hawaii Business. That isn’t surprising since her parents, Neil and Lora Nakai, both successful small business owners, have a long association with the magazine. Neil owns Neil Nakai Inc., a successful specialized construction company. Lora, who was featured in the magazine in 1996 (a “Success by 40” winner) and 1998 (a “Success by 40” judge), owns the Heaven on Earth Downtown Day Spa and Executive Massage. Young Marielle has also appeared in Hawaii Business, but she was then an infant held by her mother in the 1998 feature. Says Lora: “Mahalo for all your support for business.
During the last couple of months, Associate Editor Jacy Youn and I have been collecting, writing, editing and proofreading the hundreds of biographies that make up our Black Book, the who’s who of Hawaii Business that takes up the lion’s share of our December issue. We know where these men and women have worked, where they went to school and what they like to do when they aren’t being captains of industry. It’s been an education.
One thing that we noticed after scrolling through thousands of little bits of information is that there seems to be no similar school or level of education or type or amount of experience that will propel one to the top of one’s profession. Many of our Black Book executives have gone to fancy schools, many haven’t; many of them have worked all around the country and around the world, many haven’t worked off the island.
Catherine Cruz, our new senior editor, was among the people at Hawaii Business with sharp eyes and sharper minds who helped create and copy edit the Black Book. Catherine comes to us from Guam, having helmed the magazine Guam Business. She’s a graduate of the University of Missouri School of Journalism and has extensive experience in Asia and the Western Pacific. Although this is Catherine’s first job covering Hawaii-based businesses, after going through the Black Book, she is very familiar with the names and faces of its key players. Expect a call from her this coming year.
