Once processed and grounded into pieces (magnified below right), the substance can be mixed into coatings for food, medicine or other goods. Because the end-product is silica, the microtags are edible and biologically inert. The tag size is similar to the width of a human hair, according to Kim. A grain of sand is six to 20 times larger.
