What a Steel!

Good things come in small packages.

“I’m hooked,” confesses this condo owner, who recently remodeled his kitchen with Viking appliances. “I think Viking has the best stuff out there,” he says. For the past 15 years, this homeowner has installed Viking in kitchen remodels across the country: Palm Springs, Laguna Beach and New Orleans. His expansive New Orleans kitchen, for example, boasts four Viking dishwashers in four corners of the kitchen, multiple stove tops and more. When it came time to remodel his Honolulu condo kitchen, he says, choosing Viking appliances was “the natural thing to do.”

The owner wanted his local kitchen to function the same as his larger, Mainland kitchens, but on a smaller scale. Except, at about 15 by eight feet, the condo kitchen was small. Too small, one would think, for nine built-in appliances: trash compactor, dishwasher, five-burner range, hood, full-height wine cellar, ice machine, microwave, oven and refrigerator/freezer. The kitchen’s only non-Viking appliance is the Zephyr Milano hood, which better suited this particular kitchen design.

“Jon Ashton, of Island Home Building Materials, and I took about three weeks on design,” the owner says. “Ashton measured everything down to 1/16 of an inch. It was tight, but we managed to find a place for everything.”

Since the owner entertains often, Viking’s full-height, seven-foot wine cellar and ice maker were “must haves.” In order to get a wine cellar of that size quickly, the owner contacted Viking’s local representative, Al Lum, for help. Lum explains that the wine cellar is one of Viking’s stand-out products. It holds 150 bottles, with the exclusive TriTemp Storage System, which features three separate temperate zones to preserve wine and bubbly at optimum serving temperatures. Fifteen shelves pull out for easy access to standard, magnum and half-size bottles. “I tell you, the wine cellar, with its temperature zones, is one of the best products Viking has come up with,” the owner says.

The wine cellar is part of Viking’s Designer Series, which, according to Lum, is perfect for contemporary spaces such as this condo. The Designer Series is recognized for its uniformity and consistency, from the shine of its metal to its handle style. “We call it design integrity,” says Lum.

The owner agrees. “I don’t like kitchens that have 10 different brands of appliances. I like the fact that Viking has this steady line. You can add anything and everything you want, and it will always match.”

Originally, the owner only planned to replace the condo’s appliances, but later decided to gut the entire interior. The original wall that separated the kitchen from the rest of the condo hid the unsightly sink and stove, but it also blocked the cook’s view of the Yacht Harbor and Diamond Head. During the remodel, the wall was torn down and replaced with a Brazilian granite cooktop bar. The bar extends into the kitchen, creating an L-shape counter and a much needed eating area.

“The granite is beautiful, especially at night, with the Tech lighting & the place just comes to life, ” the owner says. “The lights pick up all the pearl, opalescence and blue.”

The kitchen’s masculine cabinets, designed by Island Home Building Materials, were built around the stainless steel kitchen. “I wanted to go with a general, gray tone cabinetry, but it needed to be a little darker and give texture and contrast to the stainless steel appliances.” To give the cabinetry character, the solid wood doors were crafted with vertical grooves, giving the kitchen more visual interest and depth.

“I’m very pleased with the entire kitchen; it’s very serviceable,” the owner says. “Cooking and clean up is just like clockwork. Plus, it has all the extras.” He notes the five-burner, electric stove top, with the additional panel for baking, the self-cleaning and defrosting ice maker and the ultra-quiet trash compactor. “Some compactors sound like a train is coming. Not this one. Viking is just great stuff all the way around.”
