Celebrating its 15th anniversary milestone this year, Zephyr Insurance Company, Inc. (Zephyr) has roots and expertise that go back to the state’s Hawaii Hurricane Relief Fund (HHRF).  Zephyr provides residential hurricane coverage and services, and is managed by an experienced and seasoned senior management team with over a century of combined industry experience.

“We were established at a critical time for the state, as the first residential property insurance company specializing in hurricane insurance coverage after Hurricane Iniki,” says Richard Toyama, President and CEO, of the company’s formation in 2000. “The mortgage banking and real estate industries relied heavily on the required hurricane insurance coverage that Zephyr provided shortly after the state discontinued the coverage written through the HHRF and with many homeowners’ insurance companies still not wanting to provide this important catastrophe coverage.”

Amori Ogata, serves as Zephyr’s Executive Vice President, COO and CFO and exemplifies the depth of local expertise and credibility that Zephyr’s talented staff offers to island residents. “We only do business here in Hawaii and in an exclusive specialty,” Ogata says. “That means our policyholders can reach out and talk to a local staff person who understands their needs and concerns.”

At Zephyr, it’s all about preparedness and the team is exceptional at walking its talk. Each May, the company practices a real-life drill with its own Hurricane Preparedness Test. At the first trigger of a simulated hurricane, a team of claim adjusters flies from the mainland to Hawaii and deploys to the homes of actual Zephyr customers (who volunteer to go through the process), to assess “damages” and settle test losses.

“It’s that kind of preparation that keeps us ready for actual events, such as when Hurricane Iselle hit last August 2014” Toyama says. “Our team was well- prepared and able to respond to our insureds on a timely basis.”
