15-April-ASB-01What’s the recipe for a great work experience? Start with awesome people, add great benefits, and for good measure, top off with an unstuffy approach to banking.

“We put a daily, consistent effort into our employee experience,” says Beth Whitehead, executive vice president and chief administrative officer. “Our culture is very relaxed. In fact, we refer to ourselves as the ‘unstuffy bank.’ And that culture has translated into a fantastic customer experience as well.”
Celebrating 90 years of serving island residents and businesses, ASB has racked up six consecutive years of Best Places to Work honors. They accomplish this by a core belief that happy teammates lead to happy customers.

For ASB’s more than 1,200 teammates, weekly paydays, casual dress code, birthday holidays and an innovative employee wellness program called LifeBalance, rounds out an organization that places a high value on creating the best employee experience.

“We stress working hard and having fun,” Whitehead says.

While all organizations have benefits, what makes ASB’s benefits unique is the focus on the holistic well being of each employee. Through ASB’s LifeBalance program, ASB has created innovative programs that inspire teammates to participate in fun activities focused on well-being. In 2015, teammates are challenged to complete the Four-Peak Challenge, a step challenge that is equivalent to reaching the summit of four of Hawaii’s historic peaks. If walking is not a preference, teammates can also take advantage of on-site yoga, hula, pilates and the popular drums alive class. A new program launched recently is ASB’s Life Coaching program which is designed to provide teammates who choose to participate with tools to discover personal strengths and breakdown barriers to success. As part of this innovative program, a personal coach works with teammates on their individual goals through programs such as, Change your Habits, Change your Life, Mission Nutrition, Address the Stress and Nip it in the Butt, a program to help kick tobacco products.

ASB also welcomes new teammates on their first day with lunch hosted by its executive team. “I get e-mails all the time from new team members who say they never met anyone from the executive team in their former companies,” Whitehead says. “Here, at ASB, they met our CEO on their first day. It sets the tone of who we are and lets teammates know we care about them and that we’re committed to making their career with us as meaningful and fulfilling as possible. That’s the Holy Grail for us. It’s that feeling you get when people love their work.”
