Unlocking The Potential of Every Student
Assets School identifies and works with each student’s unique strengths and challenges, adjusting strategies so they can grow, flourish and feel a sense of belonging.

Assets is the only school in Hawai‘i specializing in educating children who are gifted, dyslexic, or have other language-based learning differences. Serving students in kindergarten through 12th grade, the school offers small class sizes, skilled faculty and evidence-based practices.
This year, the school has been investing deeply in its greatest resource – its teachers.. More faculty have completed advanced Slingerland training, “a structured, multisensory approach to teaching language and literacy,” explains Ryan Masa, Assets Head of School. Not only does the training enhance instructors’ ability to support students with language-based learning differences, but it can also enhance reading and writing instruction for all learners.
The school is also proud of the growing impact of its Transforming Lives Center (TLC). “The TLC offers comprehensive evaluations and other specialized assessments that help families understand their child’s unique learning profile,” explains Masa. “A handful of our current students first came to know Assets through the TLC, as it provided the insight and clarity needed to chart a successful educational path.” Yet the benefit goes beyond Assets’ own student body, serving families across Hawai‘i by helping them access the tools and strategies their children need, no matter the educational setting they ultimately choose.
“It’s become a true resource, transforming not just individual lives, but the way our broader community understands and supports different kinds of learners,” says Masa. The school also offers free literacy screening for any student in mid-kindergarten through third grade.
At Assets, students’ unique learning styles and perspectives are seen as a benefit. “They will be among the problem-solvers, innovators, and leaders our world needs most,” says Masa. “We nurture critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration — skills essential for tackling complex challenges like sustainability, equity, and global interconnectedness. By building resilience, empathy, and the confidence to advocate for themselves and others, we’re preparing them to lead with both competence and compassion.”
