Creating Healthier Communities Together
Hawai‘i Pacific Health (HPH) recognizes that affordability is a growing challenge nationwide and is especially severe in Hawai‘i. Our state’s geographic isolation and some of the highest costs of living in the country have created overwhelming financial pressures on families.
In response HPH and Hawai‘i Medical Service Association (HMSA) are proposing a partnership to establish One Health Hawai‘i, a new nonprofit parent organization that would align strategy, strengthen collaboration, and improve coordination statewide across Hawaiʻi’s health care system.
The shared goal is to improve care delivery, elevate the patient experience, expand access, and ensure long-term financial sustainability. Both organizations are especially grounded in a commitment to preserve an open system where people can continue to choose their physician, insurance, and facility they trust.
By aligning HPH and HMSA more closely, it allows for several financial benefits, including:
- Stabilizing rising health care costs by reducing duplication and eliminating inefficiencies.
- Increasing access to care by streamlining documentation, scheduling, and authorization processes.
- Reinvesting savings into the health care ecosystem and community well-being by supporting education, housing stability, food security, financial literacy, and workforce development.
Collectively, these actions will strengthen Hawai‘i’s health care system, including all providers, payers and employers in support of creating healthier communities statewide.
The boards of both companies have granted approval to advance a proposal for submission to the appropriate state and federal agencies, formally initiating the public review process. This proposal addresses the drivers of unaffordable health care by simplifying delivery, reducing inefficiencies and supporting earlier interventions.
This effort is not about any one system or organization – it’s about building a resilient, inclusive health care ecosystem that will serve our entire community for generations to come.
