100 Years Strong: American Savings Bank’s Century of Community Impact

This year, American Savings Bank (ASB) celebrates 100 years of serving and investing in Hawai‘i’s residents, businesses and communities. To reaffirm its commitment, the bank launched the ASB Charitable Foundation and kicked off its year-long festivities in January with a $100,000 contribution to local nonprofits nominated by its teammates and voted on by the public.

“Reaching 100 years as Hawai‘i’s community bank is something truly special,” said Beth Whitehead, Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer. “We’re focused on making a lasting difference by investing in affordable housing, expanding financial education and revitalizing our Chinatown, Kalihi and Palama neighborhoods. The impact we’ve made so far inspires us to do even more for the next 100 years.”

Teammates Driving Real Impact

ASB’s teammates are the driving force behind the community impact initiatives. Through its Community Council, ASB identifies meaningful projects aligned with its goals, rallies volunteers, promotes a culture of giving and ensures teammates stay connected to the needs of the community. Their engagement, hands-on involvement and leadership bring real, meaningful results:

• 136,000 Hours of Service: Teammates contributed their time and talent through ASB’s Seeds of Service volunteer program to support projects and organizations across the islands. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the program, which began in 2005.
• $3 Million Raised: With 95 percent average participation, the Kahiau Teammate Giving Program has provided a much-needed financial boost to local nonprofits since 2011.
• $1.6 Million Awarded to Young Entrepreneurs: ASB’s annual KeikiCo Competition awards prize money for their students’ winning business plans focused on addressing community needs.
• $100 Million Invested in Affordable Housing: Through its This is HOME program, ASB has helped hundreds of families achieve homeownership—keeping local people living where they love, right here in Hawaii.
• $1 Million for Aala Park: ASB has invested in park enhancements and community events, from free fitness classes to youth skateboard clinics and family fun fairs, creating a safe, vibrant gathering space.
• $3.27 Million for Hawaii Communities: Since 2023, ASB has teamed up with the Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines Member Impact Fund to strengthen local programs, including $525,000 to aid Lahaina homeowner recovery.
