Kuakini Health System – Caring Is Our Tradition

Kuakini Medical Center opened in 1900 as the Japanese Charity Hospital to provide free health care to Japanese immigrants in need. Since then, from a small, two-story wooden building on one acre of land in Kapalama to its current 10-acre site on Kuakini Street, Kuakini has evolved into a unique health system that serves all of Hawaii. Kuakini is the last remaining independent health system in Hawaii that is not part of a larger multi-hospital system.
Kuakini recognizes the importance of supporting independent physicians for the benefit of the patients and the community who receive greater personalized, patient-centered care.
Kuakini’s independent model helps safeguard access to care, promotes better patient outcomes, contributes to more cost-effective care, and provides job opportunities that help keep independent physicians working in Hawaii. Other benefits include timely access to care and services such as radiation therapy treatments, imaging and emergency services.
This year, a comprehensive transformation of Kuakini Health System, the parent company of four subsidiaries, including Kuakini Medical Center, has begun. Kuakini is building upon its strength as a strategic, independent asset in Hawaii; serving underserved communities; having both acute and long-term care capacity on the same campus; and owning a world-renowned biobank with more than 60 years of invaluable data and specimens from Kuakini’s research programs.
Kuakini has opened a Breast Health Institute, which is one of several initiatives to address women’s health needs, such as breast health, menopause management, osteoporosis and bone density, and preventive screenings.
With its investment in health and wellness initiatives, the Kuakini Health Care Team honors a longstanding commitment to improving the health and well-being of Hawaii’s communities.
