HMSA Expands Community Impact with $3.4 Million in Local Investments
Made in Hawaii, for Hawaii: HMSA’s commitment to community health. See how HMSA invests in the health and well-being of Hawaii.

In 2024, HMSA and the HMSA Foundation invested more than $3.4 million in local organizations to support the health and well-being of residents. A warm bed, a first-generation medical student, and a new fitness court on Maui – these efforts show that community health is multifaceted and takes many hands to provide meaningful opportunities.
Founded by social workers 87 years ago, HMSA continues its mission to improve Hawaiʻi’s health and well-being. With its role as a health insurer foundational to its mission, HMSA has evolved into a health organization that partners with physicians, hospitals, and community to improve health in innovative ways.
Strengthening communities
Together, HMSA and the HMSA Foundation have made a lasting impact in our community. Since 1996, the HMSA Foundation has contributed more than $44 million to strengthen communities and have brought this commitment to life through initiatives rooted in equity and transformation, including:
- Addressing housing as health care with investments in Family Promise of Hawaiʻi’s Ohana Navigation Centers (permanent emergency shelter facility), HomeAid Hawaiʻi’s Iwilei Kauhales (group of homes), and Project Vision Hawaiʻi’s Maui Medical Respite (specialty shelter).
- Supporting workforce development with multiyear grants to the University of Hawaiʻi’s John A. Burns School of Medicine and the School of Nursing & Dental Hygiene, and the Healthcare Association of Hawaii’s health care workforce initiative.
- Access to two free fitness courts, which opened this summer on Maui through a partnership with County of Maui, HMSA, and National Fitness Campaign.
In 2025, the Foundation also proudly announced its second cohort of community-based nonprofit organizations committed to advancing collective health and well-being statewide:
- Hoa ‘Āina O Mākaha
- Hui Mālama I Ke Ala ‘Ūlili
- I Ola Lāhui
- Kahumana
- Kūkulu Kumuhana O Anahola
- The Maui Farm
- Nohona Health
- Palama Settlement
