For Mikayla, protecting her children meant making a decision no parent expects to face: leaving home and stepping into an uncertain future. After enduring abuse and fearing for her family’s safety, she chose to leave in search of something every family deserves, safety, stability, and the chance to move forward.

She arrived at a Child & Family Service (CFS) domestic violence shelter with only a few belongings and one priority, to protect her children. A safe place to stay was essential, but it was only the beginning of the support her family needed.

Through CFS, Mikayla received counseling to begin healing from trauma, case management support to navigate housing, employment and financial stability, and court advocacy to help her secure protection and understand the legal process. Her children received emotional and academic support, helping them stay connected to school and continue learning during an extraordinarily disruptive time.

Today, Mikayla and her children are moving forward with greater stability, confidence, and hope.

Giving From the Heart

Each year, CFS domestic violence shelters on Oahu and Hawaii Island provide safety and support to more than 600 families facing violence, trauma, and hardship. As public funding falls short of the true cost of providing these services, corporate philanthropy plays an important role in helping bridge the gap.

CFS also helps families build greater financial stability through education and resources, closely aligning with American Savings Bank’s community focus on financial education.

ASB supports CFS through Kahiau, its annual teammate giving campaign. Kahiau means “to give from the heart without expecting anything in return.”

In 2025, 94% of ASB teammates participated. With a match from the ASB Charitable Foundation, total giving reached $277,000, including $110,000 donated to CFS.

For nearly 15 years, Kahiau has generated more than $4 million in donations to Hawaii nonprofits, including over $1 million to CFS since 2012.

For families like Mikayla’s, that support helps keep doors open, critical services available, and a path forward within reach.
