The Next Gen of the AEC Industry | G70 Internship Program
Each year, G70 opens its doors to students from around the country and abroad for an opportunity to learn, grow, and connect with seasoned professionals through a paid, full-time summer internship.
Our community and world are changing daily, and with it, the talents, experience, skills, and expertise needed to be a part of that growth cycle are changing too. One of the most essential elements of internships is the opportunity to integrate knowledge and theory gained in the classroom with practical application, to develop skills in a professional, or community setting.
Each year, G70 opens its doors to students from around the country and abroad for an opportunity to learn, grow, and connect with seasoned professionals through a paid, full-time summer internship in architecture, civil engineering, interior design, planning, graphics, and marketing.
Interns receive unique hands-on experience in projects, working alongside licensed professionals to understand the dynamics of working on a design team with consultants and clients, while experiencing the unique, friendly culture of G70. Staff volunteer as dedicated coordinators to lead educational workshops ranging from design to career planning and hand-sketching to construction site visits. By the end of their internships, the group has gained exposure to each of the company’s disciplines.
A recent graduate, and recent addition to the Civil Engineering department, Julia Kimoto, E.I.T. started as an intern with G70 and decided to stay on, “I appreciated that this was a place that everyone was valued no matter their title,” she said. “As an intern, you will get in what you put out, both in terms of learning within your field and professional and character development.”
Former intern, now Associate and Project Architect Lance Hirai serves as one of the coordinators for the G70 internship program, and also volunteers as a liaison for both AIA Honolulu and UH School of Architecture’s student led organization, AIAS. “This position has helped me connect with the students and learn more about their concerns or questions about our profession. Through this they learn a little more about what we do at G70 and we’re able to find great students for internships” states Hirai.
While the interns are encouraged to continue expanding their experiences, many choose to come back as employees. When asked, the relationships they have built with their peers and principals, and the opportunities to learn and grow have become an underlying theme.
