Strengthening Hawai‘i’s Health Ecosystem

Hero Strengthening Hawaiis Health Ecosystem

There are urgent health care challenges facing families, such as rising costs, limited access to care and provider shortages statewide. While these issues have persisted for years, Hawai‘i Pacific Health (HPH) recognizes that significant structural solutions are needed now more than ever.

HPH and Hawai‘i Medical Service Association (HMSA) are proposing a partnership to establish One Health Hawai‘i, a new nonprofit parent organization that would align strategies, strengthen collaboration and improve coordination across Hawaiʻi’s health care system.

“We are aiming to make health care more affordable and reinvest that savings back into the health and well-being of our communities,” said Ray Vara, president & CEO of Hawai‘i Pacific Health.

Through this affiliation, structural changes for improving care delivery, enhancing the patient experience, expanding access and ensuring long-term financial sustainability can be made together with opportunities for other health systems and providers.

“HPH and HMSA remain committed to keeping an open system,” said Vara. “An individual’s choice will still drive this new care model, we know how important that is. Community members can choose the doctor, insurance and facility they trust most.”

One Health Hawai‘i will allow for expansive health care improvements, including:

  • Improving patient experience through more coordinated care and better outcomes.
  • Increasing access to care and strengthening connectivity by leveraging shared data to streamline documentation, scheduling and authorization processes.
  • Enhancing quality of care without extra reporting and other administrative burdens.

Collectively, these actions will strengthen Hawai‘i’s health ecosystem and build healthier communities statewide for generations to come.
